Position yourself for career success in science and technology majors at Rensselaer by pursuing a dual major path through the Lally School of Management.
Program Overview
Undergraduate students who fulfill all the degree requirements for two curricula and who have met the conditions below will have completed a dual major. They will receive one diploma noting both majors. The dual major option allows students to create an academic and career path that’s unique to them—allowing them to benefit from the strengths of RPI’s science and technology program coupling with business.
The Lally dual major path is simple:
- When applying to Rensselaer and Lally indicate Business and Management or Business Analytics as your primary degree program. Contact the Lally Undergraduate Program Director (fletck3@rpi.edu) to indicate your interest in the dual major option at the same time you apply.
- Once Accepted and Committed to RPI and Lally, during your initial advising with the Lally Student Services office, work with your advisor to develop an appropriate plan of study and plan for your first semester courses.
- Once you arrive on campus, meet with your Lally Advisor to complete dual major paperwork for the Registrar’s Office.
Although there are over a dozen dual majors that have been completed by Lally students over the past decade, the following represent some of the more popular options. Please note that the dual program name is simply the abbreviated name that Lally uses to describe each dual major.
Business and Management & Sustainability Studies Dual Major (Business & Sustainability) – 124 credits
Career Path: The dual major program in Business & Management and Sustainability Studies is ideal for socially curious and sustainably-engaged business students, or for sustainability-oriented students who crave a deeper understanding of the business reasons for, and solutions to, problems with economic, environmental, and social impacts.

Business and Management & Information Technology and Web Science (Information Technology & Web Management) - 128 credits
Career Path: Knowledge of business and information technology/web services leads to a number of different types of careers such as: IT Project Manager, Business Systems Analyst, Web Developer, Digital Marketing Manager, E-commerce Manager, Data Analyst, Chief Information Officer (CIO), UX/UI Designer, IT Consultant, Business Intelligence (BI) Developer, Network Administrator, and Cybersecurity Analyst
Business and Management & Design, Innovation and Society (Business & Design Innovation) - 124 credits
Career Path: A dual major in Business and Design, Innovation, and Society equips students with a unique blend of skills in creativity, strategic thinking, and business acumen, opening a variety of career paths, including: Product Manager, Brand Manager, Innovation Consultant, Creative Director, Design Strategist, Marketing Manager, Design Operations Manager, and Customer Experience Manager. With an added concentration or minor in Entrepreneurship, students are geared to create or work for start-up companies.
Business and Management & Economics (Business & Economics) - 124 credits
Career Paths: Knowledge of how individuals businesses operate and how systemic economic forces impact industries and businesses can lead to a number of types of careers such as: Financial Analyst, Economist, Management Consultant, Business Analyst, Market Research Analyst, Financial Manager, Economic Consultant, Policy Analyst, Operations Manager, and Investment Banker. Students are encouraged to add a Finance concentration to this dual major.
Business and Management & Communications, Media, and Design (Strategic Marketing & Communications) – 124 – credits
Career Path: A dual major in Business and Management & Communication, Media, and Design offers a versatile skill set that prepares graduates for a variety of career paths where creativity, strategic thinking, and communication are essential. Careers suitable for graduates with this dual major include: Marketing Manager, Public Relations Manager, Brand Manager, Creative Director, Digital Marketing Specialist, Content Strategist, Media Planner, Social Media Manager, UX/UI Designer, Advertising Manager, and Corporate Communications Manager.
Business and Management & Games and Simulation Arts and Sciences (Business & Gaming) - 128 credits

Business Analytics & Computer Science (Computational Business Analytics) - 144 credits

This dual major works best for students transferring in college or AP credits to allow for a traditional four-year completion.

Career Path: A degree that combined Business Analytics with Economics provides students with comprehensive training in quantitative analysis, economic theory, and business strategy. This can lead to pursue careers such as: Public Policy, Management Consulting, Data Analytics, Data Scientist, Economic Analyst, Financial Analyst, Business Intelligence Analyst, Operations Research Analyst, Market Research Analyst, Risk Manager/Actuary, Quantitative Analyst, and even a Chief Data Officer (CDO).

Spotlight
Nick is a BSAN and ITWS dual major and is on track to graduate in Spring 2025. Nick is also a co-president to the Rensselaer Finance Club.
In Spring 2024, he interned at EC M&A, a boutique investment bank with a special focus on servicing companies in the industrial technology and life sciences industries. In his role as an Investment Banking Analyst, Nick supported and executed on multiple sell-side and buy-side M&A processes. He also had the opportunity to help pitch the firm’s services to prospective clients. Nick worked out of EC’s New York office and will return as a full-time Analyst upon graduation.
