Frequently Asked Questions
How can I gauge if I am a competitive applicant for admission?
Competitive applicants will have a GPA above 3.0, a GMAT score of 600 or a GRE score of 156 Q/146 V/4.0 AW. Please note, however, that these are not minimum requirements, and the GRE/GMAT requirement is currently optional. All applications are reviewed holistically, taking into account grades, test scores, letters of recommendation, work experience, and your personal statement. Our MBA/M.S. Admissions team welcomes the opportunity to answer your enrollment questions and can be contacted at (518) 276-6565 or lallygrad@rpi.edu.
If I am accepted to one program, may I transfer at a later date to a different program?
Once a decision has been made on your application, you cannot transfer your acceptance to a different program.
On what conditions will you waive application components?
To ensure the quality of our incoming class, application component waivers are rarely granted. All application components, outlined here, must be submitted prior to consideration by the admissions committee. The English language test may only be waived if the applicant has completed a degree program at a U.S. university within two years of the application deadline of the program to which he/she is applying. Please refer to the detailed TOEFL requirement.
If I am accepted, may I defer my start date to a different semester?
Rensselaer does not postpone/defer admission for graduate study to a later term.
What Lally programs are STEM-designated fields?
M.S. in Quantitative Finance and Risk Analytics, M.S. in Business Analytics, M.S. in Supply Chain Management. The Lally MBA program is not currently STEM-designated.

Do you offer scholarships? Do they require a separate application process?
We offer financial aid (in the form of scholarships) to a select number of MBA/M.S. applicants based on merit. All applicants are automatically considered and there is no additional application required on your part. Scholarship recipients are typically notified shortly after their admissions decision is released. Limited fellowships are also available: one is for students whose emphasis is in manufacturing; the Herman Fellowship is for women with an interest in entrepreneurship. We support veterans through the Yellow Ribbon program and the GI Bill.
Are there TA/RA positions available? What about other employment options for Lally students?
Lally does not currently offer TA or RA positions to its students, nor are there other employment opportunities within the school. The Graduate Admissions Office hires several Lally students each year to help with program recruitment and marketing. Applications for these positions are available in September each year.
Do you have spring/summer start dates or part-time programs?
Lally MBA/M.S. programs generally start in the fall, but we offer fall and spring start terms. We do offer part-time programs.
What is the difference between an M.S. degree and an MBA? Do you require work experience?
The M.S. programs are two semesters (30 credits), and are designed to enhance your learning in a specific area of knowledge. Work experience is preferred, but not required, for all Lally M.S. programs. We offer three M.S. options:
- Business Analytics
- Quantitative Finance and Risk Analytics (QFRA)
- Supply Chain Management
These options to specialize are also available in the MBA program (45 credits). The MBA program offers a broad education in business fundamentals, in addition to a specific focus, allowing for a diverse and comprehensive educational program. A variety of student services are available to our MBA/M.S. students, and, as a result, their degree from the Lally School enables exceptional career potential.
Can I add an internship component to my degree plan?
Some students choose to add an internship to their degree plan. For students in our specialty M.S. programs, adding an internship requires extending your study by one additional semester. MBA students typically incorporate an internship in the summer between their second and third semesters.
