Program Overview

Rensselaer has partnered with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai to equip entrepreneurs with the mix of skills and expertise needed to successfully grow innovative life science start-ups into commercially viable enterprises in New York state and beyond. This new certificate will allow you to understand a complex regulatory framework, define an intellectual property strategy, and balance the ethical boundaries associated with life sciences innovation and entrepreneurship. This foundation will then allow you to conceive, build, and launch your concept in this experiential program.

Define the Future of Life Sciences Innovation

Learn about entrepreneurship and business fundamentals while exploring the challenges start-ups face as they navigate legal and intellectual property issues and competitive forces when commercializing a biomedical innovation.

Leverage the expertise in biomedical commercialization found within the Rensselaer and Mount Sinai networks by visiting leading entrepreneurs within the Capital Region and New York City’s impressive biomedical ecosystem.

Analyze the philosophical and moral issues raised by recent and anticipated developments in the areas of biology and medicine, including racial healthcare disparities, abortion, euthanasia, organ transplants, experimentation on human patients, patient rights, and more.

Embark on a project-based experience and develop innovative life sciences concepts for commercial application. Students will work directly in a consultant or developmental role for a life sciences start-up company or concept where they will address fiscal and regulatory challenges, either working individually or in small teams. Subject matter experts in the life sciences industry will be available throughout each semester to advise students on industry-specific issues to guide teams through their entrepreneurial journey.
